Re-open Idaho: Solutions to keep businesses open, the vulnerable protected, and people free

The Idaho Freedom Foundation is focused on providing policy solutions for state and local officials that fight the coronavirus pandemic while respecting individual liberty. Two days after Idaho Governor Little declared a state of emergency, IFF provided a list of market-based actions to help Idahoans weather the coronavirus storm. Little adopted many of IFF’s recommendations, like suspending excessive medical license requirements to get more physicians in the field, and widely allowing telehealth consultations.

After the governor shut down non-essential businesses, IFF provided the governor’s office an alternate shut-down order that reopens Idaho’s economy. In addition, following an IFF complaint, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare removed a web form where people could report a business for suspected social distancing violations.

There are better ways the government can respond—to respect freedom while substantially helping the community. IFF praised the City of Rigby, where police officers, rather than issue tickets for social distancing violations, delivered food and supplies to residents most at risk. As the pandemic continues, IFF offers and praises solutions that fight the virus and respectfully provides alternatives to misguided policies with long-term consequences for liberty.
