Success Stories

Victory for Wisconsin Workers: The Wisconsin Governor signed a bill that will make it easier for professionals seeking a state license to receive one in an expedited fashion. The Badger Institute noted it’s currently not uncommon for applicants to wait months or longer to receive the credential that the state requires them to secure in order to practice their occupation. This new legislation is designed to streamline that process.

House Bill 122, which permanently expands access to telehealth services for all Ohioans received final approval from the Ohio General Assembly and now awaits the Ohio Governor’s signature. Throughout the pandemic, Ohioans have relied on this proven Buckeye Institute-championed reform and in passing the bill, the Ohio General Assembly has made it possible for all Ohioans—particularly the elderly and those in rural Ohio—to see their health care providers and get the care they need.

Solutions from the states: This week’s policy briefs

Study: Pa. Taxpayers on Hook for at Least $42 Million in Lobbying Costs
Pennsylvania taxpayers paid for at least $42 million in lobbying expenses from 2007–2020, according to two reports released today by the Commonwealth Foundation. The $42 million figure represents the tip of the iceberg. Just 40% of 1,518 governments entities responded to Commonwealth Foundation’s data-gathering open records requests.

Medicaid’s Metamorphosis
Designed as a ‘safety net’ health plan for the poor and disabled, Medicaid has grown to cover more than one-third of the state’s population. A new report from the Empire Center finds that even as poverty declined, the program’s rolls grew by 1.4 million or 29 percent from 2010 to 2019.

State Pandemic Response: Understanding the Impact on Employment &. Opportunity
The Georgia Center for Opportunity released a new report linking the number of jobs lost in a given state with how severely that state shut down its economy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also found that states that imposed more draconian economic shutdowns continue to feel severe job losses even to today.

Bad Returns: How Idaho College Degrees Fare on Debt-earnings Tests
Students and parents no longer need to ask, “Is college worth it?” The latest report by the Idaho Freedom Foundation’s Center for American Education explains the financial prospects of studying in a particular field at Idaho’s colleges.

Environmental Credits: Do They Live Up To Their Promises?
Lawsuits targeting oil and gas companies with the promise of bringing dollars for coastal restoration have had a chilling effect that has sent investment and jobs away from Louisiana. A new report from the Pelican Institute for Public Policy shows that the proposed Freeport-McMoRan settlement would have questionable impact on coastal restoration, with many of the settlement dollars likely to be spent on non-restoration projects.

2022 Missouri Blueprint
A new report by the Show-Me Institute presents 14 policy ideas aimed at moving Missouri forward to a brighter future.

WILL Issues Review Of 2020 Election, Recommendations For Reform
A 10-month review of the 2020 election in Wisconsin by the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty uncovers legal problems with election administration, but no evidence of widespread voter fraud.

Warning Sign: 2021 Update
An updated study from the Yankee Institute for Public Policy finds most of Connecticut’s towns and cities face significant unfunded liabilities from pension and retiree healthcare benefits promised to current and former employees. In fact, these liabilities have together grown more than $5 billion in just four years and are likely to climb even higher.
