With four cases before the Supreme Court this year, our work is not slowing down. To quote Dr. Fauci, “This is the time to put our foot on the accelerator,” and Becket is doing just that.
Becket is on the front lines protecting ministries from the hand of government. Whether it’s the government stimulus bill or mandates to shelter in place, Becket is carefully watching these regulations for an opportunity to check government power. And Becket’s current cases before the Supreme Court address issues that speak to all aspects of our First Amendment Freedoms:
- Do religious K-12 schools have the right to choose who is qualified to pass on the faith?
- Is it legal for the government to mandate the Little Sisters of the Poor to dispense abortion-causing drugs?
- Can the City of Philadelphia shut down Catholic adoption and foster care services because of their religious beliefs about marriage?
In addition to Becket’s legal work, Becket is taking extra time to reach out to their clients, donors, and allies to see how they are doing and to offer prayers and supplies. Becket delivered electronic tablets to the Little Sisters of the Poor home in Washington, DC so that their residents can stay in touch with their loved ones.
