Independent Institute responds to coronavirus pandemic

The Independent Institute created a website devoted to all of Independent’s scholarly articles about the coronavirus pandemic. The site is updated constantly with the latest analysis of the government and private response to the crisis. From the protection of Second Amendment rights to private enterprise solutions, it’s the go-to site for thoughtful insights, all based on personal liberty and human dignity.

Early on in the pandemic, Independent Senior Vice President Mary L. G. Theroux and Executive Director Graham Walker recorded this video, warning of government overreaction to the crisis, which creates enormous social and economic hardships far greater than the epidemic itself.

Government’s expansion during the crisis has made relevant once again the ideas of Independent Institute Senior Fellow Robert Higgs, author of the book Crisis and Leviathan, which explains the growth of government during crises, such as wars, pandemics, and economic downturns. The result is not only a new baseline for further growth, but also a government more intrusive in the lives of ordinary citizens and more resistant to meaningful reform.
