Description

The Buckeye Institute is expanding its litigation portfolio and looking for an experienced litigator to direct the Institute’s legal efforts, which will include litigation to expand economic liberty, to promote the First Amendment rights of workers post-Janus, and to strategically challenge the excesses of the administrative state.

This visionary, proactive, and sophisticated litigator will chart The Buckeye Institute’s path forward through the courts and ensure that Buckeye’s strategic work is effective and successful, and will coordinate with Buckeye’s policy experts and scholars as well to advance the Institute’s entire mission. This person will have the opportunity to leverage his/her talent to advance freedom and make an impact in both a powerful swing state that sets the tone for the nation and at the federal level.

The Buckeye Institute currently has several high-profile federal cases that are being litigated primarily by outside counsel, and this new senior-level position will be the in-house litigator at Buckeye. Buckeye’s Legal Center is comprised of Legal Fellows and Visiting Legal Fellows whose expertise informs Buckeye’s work on a variety of legal reforms and policy issues. This position will include some travel, and will report directly to the organization’s president and CEO.

Working full-time in the Columbus, Ohio, office is required. Buckeye offers a competitive salary and benefits that currently include a retirement savings plan with employer match, health insurance, and generous time-off/vacation.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate possesses the following:

  • Active license in good standing to practice law in Ohio or another state with the ability to waive into Ohio or a willingness to take and pass the next offered Ohio bar exam.
  • Juris doctorate or equivalent degree from an accredited law school.
  • 5+ years of litigation experience, with prior trial experience.
  • Prior public interest litigation experience strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of constitutional law and familiarity with public policy and the political process.
  • Strong interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Impeccable integrity.
  • Commitment to free-market solutions for public policy problems, classical liberal principles, and The Buckeye Institute’s mission.
  • Self-starting entrepreneurial work habits.
  • Detail-orientation.
  • Excellent research, analysis, writing, and speaking skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute strategic litigation.
  • Identify and select plaintiffs.
  • Manage every facet of the cases while representing litigants in courts at every level in state and federal courts.
  • Handle negotiations, draft complaints and motions, conduct depositions, and oral arguments.
  • Serve as public spokesperson on the cases.
  • Communicate regularly with clients to keep them apprized on their cases.
  • Draft and also oversee contracted attorneys’ drafts of amicus curiae briefs.
  • Coordinate additional representation with private-sector attorneys as needed.
