Description

The Mercatus Center at George Mason University is seeking a Director of Media Relations to join our Communications team. As an experienced media relations professional and manager, you will work across the organization to identify Mercatus priority initiatives, lead a team of publicists and editors to connect Mercatus’ work to the news of the day, and devise effective strategies for promoting Mercatus research and scholars in the media. This role reports to the Director of Communications.

Role Responsibilities

  • Create and execute media relations strategies for all Mercatus programs, based on the goals and audiences of each program
  • Manage and provide professional development to members of the Media team
  • Build the profile of Mercatus and Mercatus scholars through targeted media placements
  • Maintain and grow relationships with members of the media
  • Ensure all media inquiries are handled promptly
  • Work closely with members across the communications team (marketing, digital, creative, design and editorial) to identify and develop opportunities for collaborative initiatives
  • Manage the budgeting, processes, and reporting for the Media team

Qualifications

  • 7-10 years of working in media relations, public relations, or communications
  • 3-5 years of experience managing a team
  • Established relationships with members of the media, including reporters, editors, producers and podcasters
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet key deadlines
  • Proven ability to interface professionally with internal stakeholders and members of the media
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in economic policy ideas and the Mercatus mission
  • Experience using a public relations platform (Cision, Meltwater) strongly preferred
