Description

The Institute for Justice, a public interest law firm, is on the front lines fighting to end widespread abuses of government power and secure the rights that allow all Americans to pursue their dreams. The financial support of nearly 10,000 individual donors makes our work possible. Now, IJ’s development team is seeking an experienced fundraising professional to fill the role of Membership Manager at our headquarters in Arlington, VA.

The Membership Manager is responsible for soliciting and cultivating IJ’s low-dollar donor base, with an emphasis on maintaining and growing support to IJ from all donors giving through our housefile and monthly giving programs. The position is ideal for a detail-oriented, data-savvy professional who is excited to come into a well-developed appeal program and find ways to sustain past success while implementing new and better ways to increase support from IJ’s existing donor base.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage IJ’s housefile program
  • Develop the schedule for when mailings will drop and create timelines for each mailing, communicating deadlines to relevant staff
  • Work with other members of the individual giving team to determine segments and ask amounts, improve donor conversion, and ensure that IJ’s mail calendar and the data for each mailing reflect the strategies developed
  • Establish key performance indicators, track and report on results, and make adjustments as needed to ensure continual improvement within the housefile program
  • Bid out jobs and select vendors (print, production, mailing)
  • Stay abreast of industry best practices and look for ways for IJ to improve our systems and processes
  • Set and stay within previously agreed-to budgets
  • Oversee IJ’s donor welcome series, ensuring that the quality is consistent with IJ standards and looking for ways to improve the donor experience
  • Collaborate with Donor Recruitment Manager to assess and improve new donor conversion
  • Oversee IJ’s monthly giving program
  • Promote and market the giving program
  • Cultivate current monthly giving program members
  • Maintain monthly giving program mail calendar, ensuring mailings and lists are coordinated with other development mailings
  • Set and stay within previously agreed-to budgets
  • Supervise IJ’s Monthly Giving Assistant and Membership Assistant, including conducting regular check-in meetings, helping set goals and strategy, reviewing work product, and providing general guidance
  • Generate and optimize data for IJ’s flagship magazine, Liberty & Law, and IJ’s annual holiday card mailing
  • Draft summaries for department planning meetings and for reports to IJ’s board of directors

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in direct mail fundraising
  • 2+ years, or more, of personnel management experience,
  • Proven ability to manage, assess and synthesize large amounts of data; to draw actionable conclusions; and to make decisions and implement strategies based on those conclusions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • The ability to prioritize and juggle multiple projects and tasks
  • Proficiency with Salesforce, or experience with another CRM / donor database product and willingness to become proficient with Salesforce
  • Command of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams)
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work collaboratively with a team to achieve shared goals
  • Commitment to promoting individual liberty and challenging government abuse
