 Job Summary:

The Regional Advocacy Director promotes the Foundation’s education policy agenda with state policymakers and in-state advocacy partners. The Director is responsible for executive and legislative branch outreach and engagement, tracking executive and legislative action and communicating regularly with lawmakers, policymakers and state advocates to educate, promote and advance the Foundation’s policy agenda. The Regional Advocacy Director builds relationships and coalitions with state leaders and in-state partner organizations. This position will oversee a portfolio of states, with a primary focus in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Regional Advocacy Director supports state leaders and local advocates in introducing, adopting or protecting policies that transform education for the 21st century.

  • Covers State Legislative Sessions, State Board of Education meetings and other governmental meetings that impact the Foundation’s policy agenda.
  • Conducts outreach to the legislative and executive branches within a portfolio of states, as assigned.
  • Tracks legislation and executive action, reviews legislative and policy proposals and supports policy implementation.
  • Builds partnerships with policymakers and in-state advocacy organizations to promote and advance the Foundation’s policy agenda.
  • Testifies on behalf of the Foundation at legislative committee meetings, executive hearings as well as panels, conferences and other venues.
  • Assists with communications strategies by developing and supplying facts for advocacy resources.
  • Contributes to the Foundation’s overall state advocacy strategy by developing annual action plans for a portfolio of states.
  • Undertakes other interim assignments, as necessary, which may include organizing or participating in state and national convenings, developing advocacy resources, conducting policy briefings and identifying scholars for the National Summit on Education.

  • General knowledge of education policy and state politics
  • Ability to travel to attend legislative and executive meetings
  • Deep understanding of political and legislative processes
  • Ability to differentiate between and appropriately manage 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) activities


The position requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least five years of experience working in the legislative or executive branch of government in public policy, advocacy, legislative bill drafting, tracking and analysis. A background in Social Science, Political Science, Public Administration, and/or an associated subject is desirable. Management experience a plus.
