Description

EdChoice, a national nonprofit organization that promotes state-based educational choice programs, is seeking a State Policy Associate to join its state team. This position will focus on policy development, analysis, writing and training. General responsibilities will include coordinating and producing policy positions and data related to educational choice.

Successful candidate will have a working knowledge of state legislative practice and solid experience in education policy and policy analysis. Candidate must be a self-starter with outstanding writing and communications skills, the ability to multi-task and an entrepreneurial, adaptable, diplomatic approach to the work. This position may involve some travel (when safe) to various states.

Preferred qualifications include: undergraduate degree and at least one to three years of policy experience. Prefer candidate based in Central Indiana location.

Full Job Description

Position: State Policy Associate

Purpose: As part of the State Team, the State Policy Associate will help advance EdChoice’s mission by coordinating and producing policy positions and data related to educational choice. Working closely with other internal teams and state partners, this position will focus on policy development, analysis, writing and training.

President and CEO (acting State Team Leader)

Vice President of Programs (to be filled)

Responsibilities

Policy and Legislation

Review and evaluate policies and legislation to determine the benefits and impact of any changes that may occur.

Specific duties include:

  • Review and evaluate legislation and policies related to educational choice.
  • Determine the benefits and drawbacks of policies and provide feedback on existing and proposed policies.
  • Identify flaws in and effects of policies and legislation, suggesting edits and improvements as necessary.
  • Maintain legislative tracking list, updating as necessary.
  • Provide bill design advice to local organizations and policymakers as directed.
  • Collaborate with the internal team on production of policy white papers, opinion writing, and television/radio interviews in states.
  • As directed, provide or support expert testimony in various states and at conferences relating to educational choice.

 Data Analysis and Collection

Gather and report on both quantitative and qualitative data, analyzing it for any trends or important information that may be useful in formulating new policies.

Specific duties include:

  • Gather data for expert testimony, policy briefings, public speaking, and events.
  • Provide policy analysis for state partners, including providing data support as needed.
  • Assist in writing opinion articles in local, state, and national venues.
  • Liaise with research team on data and policy requests from states.

Writing and Outreach

Formulate reports which condense and summarize information and display key evidence for stakeholders to review.

Specific duties include:

  • Assisting with articles for the EdChoice Blog.
  • Assist research team in collecting annual school choice data.
  • Regular contribution to EdChoice blog and the Engage newsletter.
  • Help plan and coordinate and/or host policy briefings or events in policy states.

Required Skills/Qualifications
