Named in honor of the late Institute for Justice co-founder and former president, Chip Mellor, the Mellor Prize recognizes teams of litigators and advocates who work together to secure significant litigation victories that hold government officials accountable, advocate for civil society and rule of law, and help the most vulnerable among us who are least able to fight back against injustice.
In a partnership with the Institute for Justice, the winner of this prize is recognized at SPN’s Annual Meeting and awarded $100,000 to further their work.
2025 Winner
We are excited to announce that the inaugural winner of the Mellor Prize is the New Civil Liberties Alliance! Their groundbreaking work at the United States Supreme Court resulted in the overturning of the Chevron Doctrine, a decades-old document that allowed bureaucrats to interpret the law. Now, thanks to NCLA, judges are returned to their rightful position as interpreters of the law, not unelected bureaucrats.
