By now, you’ve clicked on the discussion thread thinking, “Why is Elyssa so obsessed with pop culture?” Well, this month worlds (accidentally) collided as we were reading The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun. Earlier we had a productive conversation about the book, discussing what we loved, hated, and take aways of the book.

We discussed this month how an ordinary person can make huge waves in their industry. The author was inspired on a study abroad trip to change the world. Overall, we weren’t too thrilled with the read but took away some key points, listed below:

-Not every org is lucky enough to have someone like Justin Bieber donating their money or raising your platform to solicit funds. How are you finding your Justin Bieber, who is that person?

-How are you telling people what you do? What is your elevator pitch and are you able to easily sell your organization?

-Branding “non-profit” vs “for purpose” organization

-Mantras are inspiring…but we felt like the author wasn’t a very good writer, he lacked closing the loop on a lot of his thoughts or stories.

Amanda or Chantal, please feel free to leave any additional feedback in the comments below!

Next month we will read Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport. We will continue to read/listen to audiobooks together. If this is something you are interested in, comment with your recommendations. Discussion is about 30 minutes and ranges from questions such as, “who would you cast as the main character of this book in a movie” or “what is one way you plan to integrate the author’s influence into your every day life?” I hope you consider joining us!
