Here’s my initial to-do list for our fabulous DAP summer:
- Learn the basics of how we use our Salesforce database, including the importance of exactly accurate data entry; learn to generate reports and mailing lists
- Assist with the rollout of our planned giving program; help set up our internal system of stewardship of members of our legacy society and other donor clubs
- Learn the fundamentals of direct mail, both prospect mailing and housefile mailing; our Apprentice will help with the mechanics of the printing/mailing/thanking process as well as learn how the letters are written
- Work with staff mentors on grant proposals and reports to get an inside look at that process; the Apprentice will help a staff member draft text according to his/her skill and knowledge levels
- I plan to involve the Apprentice in donor meetings and in soliciting sponsorships for an event.
Everything is subject to change/adjustment according to the Apprentice’s knowledge/skills, speed of work, level of independence, and personal interests and talents. I expect we’ll work out a good routine during the first couple weeks and find a balance between short-term tasks/easy “wins” and larger investments of time and learning that will have longer-range impacts on the organization and become the Apprentice’s “legacy.”
