We got the announcement last Friday that our capitol was going to be closed to everyone but legislators and staff. They said it was ok with 1st amendment since every meeting is livestreamed (I am also skeptical).
Basically our plan was to turn all scheduled meetings into phone calls and really rely on Comms team to bombard with social media through geo-fencing and drive emails. The silver lining is that everyone (including legislators) have more free time and are surfing social media right now.
That was basically what we did for Monday and Tuesday morning. However, it didn’t last long as Tuesday afternoon they announced they’re only taking up the budget and recessing until June.
My best advice is to lean heavily on Comms and do the best you can. I think situations like this also highlight the importance of building relationships with as many as possible to where you have legislator’s personal cell numbers. On Friday we had to run through and figure out which member of our lobbying team had each member’s number and be the point person should our session have continued like this.
