Announcements

  • The Buckeye Institute is representing a brand new client—Eric Flannery—who was forced to close down his popular burger joint (The Big Board) after DC recently suspended both his liquor license and operating license because he welcomed all customers regardless of their vaccination status. Eric and Buckeye’s Robert Alt recently joined Fox & Friends to discuss the case.
  • The Institute for Reforming Government announced an expansion of its community outreach efforts with the addition of US Army Veteran Jason Church. Serving as the Community Outreach Fellow, Jason will play a pivotal role in strengthening IRG’s ties to reform-minded, conservative activists across the state, connecting the policy to the people it serves.
  • The Mackinac Center announced the launch of the Frank Beckmann Center for Journalism—a new project that will keep citizens informed and hold government accountable with accurate news and analysis. The Center will help amplify Mackinac’s existing work, including their reporting, transparency and story-telling. New projects like Mackinac on Michigan, a monthly radio show on WJR, will be part of the Center as well.
  • The Mississippi Center for Public Policy began a critical campaign, which includes a new video, against the Mississippi Senate’s “tax plan,” as lawmakers have presented a 4% rate elimination on the income tax (one which barely anyone pays) and a $5 decrease in new car tag prices. This is opposed to the House’s “Mississippi Tax Freedom Act of 2022,” which will completely phase out the state’s income tax over a period of some years.

Success Stories

  • The Oregon Legislature is considering a bill that expands the duties of Oregon Government Ethics Commission to conduct investigations, make findings, and impose penalties for violations of public meetings law. The Cascade Policy Institute testified in support of the bill.
  • The Commonwealth Foundation highlighted how Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering a series of reforms that will empower public sector workers and defend taxpayers.
  • The Hawaii Legislature is considering a bill that would prohibit the governor or mayor from suspending requests for public records or vital statistics during a declared state of emergency. The Grassroot Institute of Hawaii noted the legislation is a good start toward protecting civil rights and open government during an emergency.
  • Kansas lawmakers are considering a bill that would establish greater legislative oversight regarding executive branch regulations. The Kansas Policy Institute noted the bill is a solid step towards healthy regulatory reform that will make Kansas more competitive and provide new opportunities for Kansas families.
  • The Utah Legislature is considering the Hope Scholarship—a program that puts parents in control of the amount of money each child is assigned in the base budget for education. The Libertas Institute expressed their support for the bill and noted most parents support funding students and not systems.
  • The Nebraska Legislature passed a bill which reduces Nebraska’s county-levied inheritance tax. The Platte Institute noted the Legislature took a good first step that will modernize Nebraska’s county inheritance tax and prevent more families and businesses from having to pay inheritance tax.
