America At Its Best – Live at LaunchPad 2021: Using Data Science to Transform Government Affairs
One of the biggest goals of state think tanks in the Network is to pass meaningful policy reforms that improve the lives of Americans in their states. Often, that kind of success comes from effective government affairs strategies and working with lawmakers to find the best solutions to problems.
But organization do not have infinite time and resources to get involved with every piece of legislation and every lawmaker. They need to find ways to maximize their efforts so that they invest in the right reforms and right lawmakers for the highest chance of success. That’s where data science comes in.
The Illinois Policy Institute created “Legiscape” to arm organizations with the information needed to make better decisions about their policy strategy. Often called the “Moneyball of government affairs,” Legiscape uses data analytics to help organizations identify the most influential lawmakers on a certain issue and identify where the organization can have the most impact. This results in more wins for free markets year over year.
Orphe Divounguy, chief economist for the Illinois Policy Institute, brought this project to LaunchPad so they could find ways to maximize its potential and scale to other states.
