Washington Policy Center released a new resource for Seattle parents who are concerned about their public School District’s plans to close 20 elementary schools, showing how there might be a way for these parents to keep their local elementary school open.
The Buckeye Institute filed an amicus brief in Kansas v. Biden, arguing—as it previously did in both Biden v. Nebraska and U.S. Department of Education v. Brown—that the Biden administration’s newest student debt cancellation program exceeds the legal authority of the secretary of education, is arbitrary and capricious, and was adopted in a procedurally improper manner.
Liberty Justice Center filed a lawsuit against the Illinois State Board of Elections for violating Illinoisans’ constitutional right to vote by abruptly repealing a campaign law mid-election. The Center also jointly filed a lawsuit with the Pelican Institute to challenge a ban imposed by the Biden Administration on the authorization of new and pending liquid natural gas export applications. Finally, the Center stepped in to represent the Rocklin Unified School District, defending the District’s parental notification policy against a legal challenge by the California Department of Education.
Florida: Governor DeSantis signed a bill into law that “streamlines” the process for parents to make use of school choice legislation that was passed last year and makes a number of needed improvements to Florida’s scholarship programs (James Madison Institute).
Hawaii: Measures to increase taxes by way of a carbon tax and a property tax “surcharge” have been defeated – victories stemming from vital and successful defense campaigns (Grassroot Institute of Hawaii).
Maryland: Residents with rare diseases can now seek cutting-edge personalized treatments after the state joined a growing movement in adopting the Right to Try for Individualized Treatments (Goldwater Institute).
Empire Center released briefs that analyze how sales tax data show that economic growth is slowing in most of New York state, and reveal how school budgets are outpacing inflation as the state’s school districts plan to spend an average of $33,404 per student next year.
Iowans for Tax Relief Foundation issued a brief which unpacks the failures of the Des Moines economic development policies – showing how these plans are ineffective and cost taxpayers dearly.
Mountain States Policy Center released a set of briefs that lend analysis on a proposed plastic bag ban that would be ineffective, examine the burden that would be imposed on residents of the Mountain States should rule makers move to adopt universal broadband fees, and issue another warning about the problems with implementing a ranked choice voting policy in Washington state.
Opportunity Arkansas produced an original analysis exposing the cost of the union-backed attempt to end education freedom and create several new universal welfare programs in Arkansas, showing how if the proposal were to pass, the amendment would blow a hole in Arkansas’ budget, costing taxpayers roughly a billion more each year.
Washington Policy Center issued briefs that reveal the price jump that has stemmed from California’s animal housing law and scrutinize the efforts of local officials that are threatening to close down businesses for continuing to use covered patios – a practice they adopted to stay afloat during the COVID lockdowns.
Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty published a brief that breaks down the Milwaukee Public School District’s financial mismanagement – in particular looking at a proposal to evict two charter schools that are historically among the highest performing schools in the district.
Maine: Legislators retreated from their attempt to illegally pass new legislation on a day reserved for dealing with governor’s vetoes – an attempt to spend some $11.4 of revenue that was left unallocated (Maine Policy Institute).
Minnesota: An amendment lifting the nuclear moratorium for small modular nuclear facilities was adopted in the Senate, bringing Minnesota a step closer to increasing energy reliability – stay tuned for more information as this develops (Center of American Experiment).
New Hampshire: Two proposed bills ease restrictions on wineries and breweries wishing to sell open container drinks at their retail locations – baby steps that attempt to exorcise lingering ghosts of prohibitionary past to further economic freedom in the state (Josiah Bartlett Center for Public Policy).
Wisconsin: Grassroots support is growing for eliminating the state income tax which is currently crushing Wisconsin families and small businesses (Institute for Reforming Government).
